Floods that occurred in Wangmo County of southwest China's Guizhou Province two weeks ago has left 30
people dead and 20 others missing, the local rescue authority said
Thursday.
The search for people missing in the flood came to an end
Thursday, according to the Flood Control and Drought Relief
Headquarters of Wangmo County.
Wang Zhibin, secretary of Wangmo County Committee of the
Communist Party of China, said more than 160,000 people were
affected by the floods that damaged 1,400 hectares of cropland and
caused 1.1 billion yuan (about US$137 million) of economic
loss.
The floods flattened more than 2,400 houses, according to
earlier reports.
A local village official named Yang Changxiong has been
proclaimed a hero for saving 15 trapped villagers and organizing
the evacuation of his village.
Sudden downpours hit Wangmo County on June 12 and 13, causing
mountain torrents that flooded the county town of Wangmo and
affected local people. Fuxing Town and Youmai and Xiaona townships
reported rainfall of nearly 200 mm.
Currently, transportation, telecommunication services and power
supply have resumed in the county and flood-affected people are
reconstructing their homes.
"Food supply is sufficient in flood-affected areas and no
epidemic disease is reported," Wang said.
