According to its staff workers, the memorial hall was built 51 years ago in memory of the Zunyi Meeting, which was held in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, during the early days of the Long March. The meeting marked an end of domination of "Left" adventurism in the Communist Party of China, determined Mao Zedong's leadership and marked a new stage of development of the Chinese revolution.

In recent years, a so-called "Red Tourism" spread across the country with sites relating to the history of CPC and its armed forces becoming a major attraction.

In 2005, 500,000 people visited the Zunyi Meeting Memorial Hall. It has received 260,000 people in the first seven months of this year, the 70th anniversary for the end of the Long March (1934-36).
