Hong Kong movie director Peter Chan has brought his new movie "Wu Xia", or "Dragon", to the Cannes Film Festival. Veteran martial arts actor Donnie Yen and his co-star in the movie also met the press with Peter on Sunday.
The film "Wu Xia" is set in the Qing Dynasty and sees Yen play Liu Jinxi - a paper maker and father of two who lives a quiet life in a remote village. But actually Liu Jinxi has a hidden past, and when a mysterious detective arrives in the village, the truth threatens to come out.
Donnie Yen not only stars in the film, he also directed and choreographed the martial arts sequences.
Donnie Yen said, "The character itself is so complicated, with different layers of complexion and emotion changes. It was certainly a big challenge at the beginning, it was a big challenge for me to take on also two roles as an actor and an action director of the film."
Joining Yen in the film is popular Chinese actress Tang Wei and Takeshi Kaneshiro. It is also Peter Chan's first venture into the martial arts genre.
Peter Chan said, "Without Donnie as an action director and as a partner directing this film, his action sequences I would have not even dared to challenge this genre or martial arts at all."
"Wu Xia" is being screened out of competition at the festival. It has been bought by the Weinstein Company which plans to release it worldwide.
