Beijing will begin hosting the 16th World Congress of Applied Linguistics Wednesday in an aim to boost the study in China.
The meeting, which is held every three years by the International Association of Applied Linguistics, will help introduce domestic research to foreign scholars and promote integration with international research standards.
China made its first bid to host the world congress in 2002 but lost the 15th World Congress to Germany. Hu Wenzhong, honorary president of the China English Language Education Association, then worked with other scholars for another bid. Susan Gass, president of AILA, and Karlfield Knapp, AILA's secretary-general, also gave suggestions to improve China's bid for the 16th World Congress, which it won in 2005.
The meeting will run until Sunday.
