A villa complex in Tianjin’s suburb area, covering 256 square kilometers and claiming the Asia’s largest, now resembles somewhat of a ghost town. More than 70 percent of its properties are vacant. According to Xinhua News Agency, most of the area’s construction has been halted and there are only a few cattle grazing the weeds. Restaurants, bars, supermarkets and chess clubs are all shut down along the empty streets. Each of the villas, with a minimum size of 200 square meters and a maximum one of 1,000 square meters, features a backyard that is hundreds to thousands of square meters big. The villa complex, projected to be the largest in all of Asia, is dotted with hot spring resorts, golf clubs, temples, commercial centers and university campuses. The complex located at the Jinjing (Tianjin-Beijing) New Area, a newly developed suburban area. According to one property manager, about 50 percent houses were occupied in 2009 and 2010; this number however dropped to no more than 10 percent in following years. Xinhua News Agency has yet to report on any reasons for the area turning into a ghost town. [Photo/Xinhua]
