Hiroo Onoda is born on March 19, 1922, in Kainan, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. Graduating from the Japanese army’s Nakano School in 1944, he was assigned to active duty in the Philippines. After the U.S. army had landed on the Lubang Island in February 1945, he hid in the island jungle and waged his own guerilla war there for 29 years, ignoring the surrender order given by the Allied Forces.
