Editor’s note: 27-year-old Liu Ting used to be a national model hero. During the past 14 years, he has been known for taking utmost care of his sick mother. Now, he is again attracting attention for his plan to become a “real” woman through transsexual surgery.

Liu Ting was born in April 1987 in Shuanglin Town of Huzhou City in east China’s Zhejiang Province. When Liu was 18, his mother suffered from uremia. His father was unable to bear the heavy medical burden and hardships and left home, leaving Liu to care for his mother alone.

In 2005, he enrolled at Zhejiang A&F University. He rented a small room near his school and brought his mother to live with him so he could continue to care for her. Every day after school, Liu did housework and nursed his mother while still working hard on his studies.

When the media eventually reported Liu’s story, his positive attitude toward life greatly moved society. Many people and charitable organizations donated money to help him treat his ailing mother. For his good conduct, both in terms of character and in scholarship, he was awarded the titles of "model student and citizen" by provincial and national organizations many times.
