Tancheng County is located in eastern China's Shandong Province. It is where woodturning toys come from. Tancheng woodturning toys feature vivid images, ingenious craftsmanship, exaggerated expressions and bright colors. Images of most Tancheng woodturning toys draw materials from China's ancient folklore, mythology and historical stories. The photo shows a craftwork series based on "Journey to the West," made with waste wood by farmers from Fannian County. Recently, Ministry of Culture publicized the list of China's national-level intangible cultural heritages. Yancheng woodturning toys, recommended by the Shandong cultural sector, were fortunate enough to be included. Craftsmen develop woodturning toys based on various lengths and thickness of waste wood. They will spin a wood plank out of wood and then polish it slowly. The craft of Yancheng woodturning toys has been passed down over several generations, from the Ming Dynasty onwards.
