Bian Mei was once called the best female bodyguard in China. From July 1988 to December 1994, she worked as a bodyguard for high-ranking officials and impressed many visiting foreign dignitaries with her professionalism and her smile. The former Soviet First Lady, Raisa Gorbachev, was particularly fond of her.

Bian Mei's father was a head bodyguard for a senior official before retirement but he never think of doing something for her daughter's success in the circle. In the spring of 1996, he was diagnosed with the end stage of lung cancer, which shocked everyone in the family.

Bian Mei visited her father in the hospital. Because her father liked her smile, she tried very hard to smile but failed to control herself and cried in front of her father instead. "In the past, I didn't believe in giving up and I believed that any difficulties can be overcome as long as one tries hard. Now I have realized that you can not do much when death beckons", she said.

Bian Mei prepared floral wreath for her father's funeral and wrote a poem on behalf of her mother to express respect and love.

A Third-place Winner in Miss Beijing Contest Bian Mei was still single at the age of 28 in 1993. At that time, there was a Miss Beijing contest organized by the Women's Federation of Beijing and the Youth Union of Beijing, which required the contestants to be single. [File photo]
