Japanese defend chopsticks' Chinese origin

Shanghai has a long history of chopsticks. Back in the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), the Town God Temple in Shanghai was well-known for its chopsticks, and Chinese people in the area gave foreigners chopsticks as precious souvenirs. To preserve this aspect of its culture, Shanghai has filed an application to give chopsticks intangible cultural heritage status.
