Editor's note: Most of equipment in this steel mill in Chongqing, southwest China, has been removed, leaving the production workshop desolate. However the view still reminds people of the glorious past and the factory's importance to the life of the city.

The steel industry used to be an important part of the economy in Chongqing, a major industrial city in southwest China. The Chongqing Steel Mill was established in 1890 in Wuhan, Hubei Province and later relocated to Chongqing in 1938 during the War of Resistance Against Japan.

The 120-year-old factory was once hailed as "the cradle of the Chinese steel industry," a key part of the country's industrialization. It used to be the largest modern steel company in Asia.

But as Chongqing restructured its economy, among other factors such as environmental protection and technological upgrades, the steel mill was again relocated to a new site some 100 kilometers from the city's downtown area.
