Editor's note: Enshi Nuo Opera is a form of dramatic art practiced by the Tujia people in Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Hubei. It is performed to fulfill a promise to the gods. People don Nuo masks made of wood, leather or paper to play the roles of characters who can communicate with gods in Nuo Opera. Nuo mask making is an important part of Enshi Nuo Opera and is inscribed on the national list of intangible cultural heritage list. Wang Rubin has studied Nuo mask making for over 20 years, and all his Nuo masks show vivid facial expressions.

Wang Rubin tidies up a display of his Nuo masks. His neighbors have nicknamed him “the King of Nuo masks” for his deep love of Nuo masks and for his exquisite craftsmanship.
