Editor’s note: Beijing, China’s capital city, seems to embody a calm serenity during the cold, early morning hours just before daybreak in the middle of January, 2016. The tranquility exists in contrast to the bustle of noise, traffic jams and countless tourists during the later hours.

Steam from an urban heating system is emitted from a manhole in the center of a crossroad as pedestrians cross the street before daybreak on a winter morning in Beijing’s Guomao area. [Photo by Chen Boyuan / China.org.cn]
