Editor's note: With a history of more than 2,000 years, Suzhou embroidery is one of the four most brilliant embroidery styles in China. It originated near the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu Province and gradually spread into many areas along the southern part of the Yangtze River. The embroidery style is well known for its use of the finest threads and its short and neat stitches. Most famous of all is its double-sided embroidery, where a single image or multiple images can be viewed from both sides of a piece. Its design has strong local characteristics, including figures, animals, flowers, pavilions, and landscapes. Embroidery products made with exquisite skill are well received by people in both China and abroad. The handcraft art was included in the first group of intangible cultural heritage lists under state-level protection by the State Council in 2006.
