Editor's note: Kashgar, located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was once a major gateway on the ancient Silk Road, linking China with Central Asian and European countries. The city has a history of more than 2,000 years. Covering an area of 1,056.8 square kilometers, it has a population of about 700,000, 80.5 percent of which are of Uygur descent. Traditional craftsmanship remains practiced, with handicraft workshops and craftsmen to be found along many streets and ancient lanes, often engaged in the production of pottery and copper articles. Kashgar is also a place of various Uygur delicacies, and the local people are well known for their warmth and hospitality.
