Editor's note:

One of the largest earthquakes in the 20th century rattled the industrial city of Tangshan on the early morning of July 28, 1976. Measured at 7.8 on the Richter scale, the quake shook the city, with around one million inhabitants, into ruins within just a few seconds. About 242,769 people were killed, and 164,851 people were seriously injured in this catastrophic event.

On July 27, many people went to the Tangshan Earthquake Ruins Memorial Park to pay tribute to the deceased ahead of the 40th anniversary of the earthquake. The Memorial Wall in the park is 7.28 meters in height and 500 meters in length, engraved with over 240,000 names of the people that lost their lives that night. Flowers, elegiac couplets and tears of sorrow filled the solemn place with an air of melancholy.
