"The Japanese's bombers would come over every day, and the alarm would go on and on. For instance, the alarm would start at 10 am, so we knew the bombers had taken off [from their base], and, in about half-an-hour, they'd be over Kunming. I was young back then, and I could cover five kilometers in that time. So, I'd run to the suburbs, caves, drains, and just hide there until they were gone. Then, I'd go back to class.
