Editor's note: Saihanba, located on the border of Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is at the southern margin of the Hunshandake Desert. After 55 years of efforts by three generations of experts, Saihanba has become the largest man-made forest park in the world.

Saihanba is a vast forest covering nearly 1.12 million hectares. It was a piece of barren land 55 years ago, but decades of hard work have turned it into an important ecological shield for Beijing and Tianjin. [Photo by Duan Wei/ China Pictorial]
