Inheritor of Gaolou rice handicraft

A student makes Gaolou rice craftwork with the model of persimmon at a primary school in Changle District of Fuzhou City, southeast China's Fujian Province, May 21, 2021. Gaolou rice handicraft, a craft that makes three dimensional artworks with rice grains, is an endangered folk art in Gaolou Village of Fuzhou with a history of about 100 years. Chen Guorui, born in 1987, decided to revive the craft after graduating from an industrial art college. He consulted local elders and continued to explore, employing coloring and antisepsis technologies. Nowadays, the craft has been listed as one of the intangible cultural heritages of Fuzhou City. Four inheriting bases for the craft have been set up in four schools in Changle District of Fuzhou, where Chen Guorui spends his leisure time to teach students. (Xinhua/Song Weiwei)
