Editor's note: Built in 1293, the Tonghui River is the northeast section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Gaobeidian, located in eastern Beijing, is one of several villages that Tonghui River flows through and has thrived thanks to the water transport and trade enabled by the river.
