Editor's note: China's 15th weeklong campaign on disaster prevention and relief began on May 6. The event, which was initiated to commemorate the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, aims to raise public awareness of disaster reduction and help people become better prepared to cope during and after disasters.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, the theme of this year's event is preventing disaster risk to ensure high-quality development. As one of the countries worst affected by natural disasters, such as floods and droughts as well as forest and grassland fires, China has made substantial efforts in recent years to strengthen its emergency response ability as well as its disaster prevention, mitigation, response and relief capacities.

Here, China.org.cn presents a selection of images from the disaster relief drills, emergency response trainings and educational programs taking place across the country this week.
