Since the first batch of postgraduates from China Agricultural University came to Xihuaizhuang village in Yongledian township, Beijing's Tongzhou district, 10 kilometers away from the capital's beltway highway over two years ago, they have helped the villagers double their collective income and bring new hope for the development of local industries in the village. Under the guidance of their mentors, the postgraduates have applied new technologies and planted new varieties of tomatoes and radishes, solving challenges faced by the village where generations have grown a single crop – radish. The 'Science and Technology Backyard' program was launched by the university, and the Xihuaizhaung one is among 139 in 24 provincial-level regions across the country. Under the program, students conduct research in experimental fields and use the acquired knowledge to help solve various agricultural problems faced by the local villagers.
