Xi Jinping Calls for Global Peace, Development, Cooperation and Justice

Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Vuk Jeremic, President of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on December 27, 2012.

Xi said that, though the world remains generally stable, continuing problems and challenges require the international community to engage in closer cooperation to maintain global peace and development.

"Peace and development are closely connected. Development is in every one's interest and serves as the basis for peace. The issue of development should be further emphasized," he added. Xi said all countries today have converging interests and share weal and woe. They should seek win-win results when developing foreign relations, safeguard common interests and create greater benefits for all under the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. He hoped the UN will be fair in its words and in its deeds. Xi said China will continue to work with the UN and other countries to achieve global peace, development, cooperation, mutual benefit, equality and justice.

China plays a constructive and crucial role in international affairs by adhering to principles and upholding justice, Jeremic said, citing China's efforts to support and safeguard the interests of developing nations. The UN attaches great importance to its cooperation with China and believes China will make greater contributions to world peace, development and prosperity, he said.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi attended the meeting.
