Sun Yang ticked the first box on the way to a possible treble of freestyle golds when he comfortably won the 400 meters at the world swimming championships in Barcelona Sunday. Sun burst into tears during a after-match interview saying that he had a very hard time in the past half year.

"I overcame big difficulties and I came here to try my best not to disappoint those who have been backing me," an emotional Sun told CCTV after his triumph.

Sun said he will strike for further breakthrough in personal events of 800m and 1,500m freestyle.

Sun had been struggling with poor form since he shot to fame following the London Games.

The 22-year-old, who rocketed to join China's top sporting stars, basketball giant Yao Ming and tennis queen Li Na, became fodder for headline writers at the beginning of this year following a public row with coach Zhu Zhigen.

Sun refused to train after he fell in love with an air hostess and threatened to split with Zhu when the coach told him to refrain from the romantic relationship.

Though the two parties put on a gesture of reconciliation under the mediation of the country's swimming authorities, Sun once again requested, and won approval for, a split with Zhu after 10 years of training with him.
