Bastian Schweinsteiger has been named as the new captain of the Germany national team.

Joachim Loew named Bastian Schweinsteiger as the new captain of Germany, the coach confirmed during an official DFB (German Football Association) press conference on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old midfielder will replace Philipp Lahm who retired from the international career after the triumph at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

"Bastian is an absolute leader, he always takes responsibility for the national team, on and off the pitch. I know that Bastian will be always there when we need him. He will be a great and worthy team captain of our national team," Loew said.

However, the midfielder will not play the friendly against Argentine due to a continuing knee injury. Thus goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will wear team captain's armband to step in for his injured teammate. Schweinsteiger scored 23 goal in 108 games wearing the international dress.

Besides the announcement of the new team captain Loew confirmed that former Stuttgart coach Thomas Schneider will be from October on his new assistant, as Hansi Flick has been named as the new DFB sporting director.
