Simona Halep shocked world number one Serena Williams when she beat her in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 on the third day of the WTA finals in Singapore.

This is the biggest win ever for 23-year old Halep, who is the fourth seed in the international tennis rankings.

This brings William's 49 game winning streak to an unexpected end.

Halep stormed through the first set and the crowds watched aghast as it took Williams 37 minutes into the game before she could score her first point.

In other games:

Two time grand slam winners Alla Kudryavtseva from Russia and Anastasia Rodionova from Australia beat Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, both from Russia, 4-6, 6-2 and 10-6 in the Women's doubles quarter-finals.
