Chinese basketball star Yao Ming, at 2.29 meters (7 feet 5 inches), was selected by the Houston Rockets as the first overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, becoming the first Asian-born player in league history to be taken first overall, making headlines throughout the United States. The Houston center was selected to start for the Western Conference in the NBA All-Star Game eight times and helped the team reach the NBA Playoffs four times, notably in the 2009 post-season when the team won a first-round series, their first playoff series victory since 1997.
