The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics (Beijing 2022) will add seven new events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on July 18.
The newly added events are Women's Monobob, Short Track Speed Skating Mixed Team Relay, Ski Jumping Mixed Team, Freestyle Skiing Big Air (Women and Men), Freestyle Skiing Aerials Mixed Team, and Snowboard Cross Mixed Team.
With the Olympic debuts of these new events, the total number of events in the Winter Olympics will rise to 109.
The Beijing 2022 will also see more female athletes and women's events than any previous edition of the Olympic Winter Games, with female participants increasing from PyeongChang's 41 percent of all athletes to 45.44 percent, the highest percentage of female Olympians for the Winter Games to date.
Despite the event additions, however, the number of total athletes will be limited to under 2,900. According to preliminary estimation, the figure will be 2,892, which is 41 fewer than that of the Pyeongchang games.
The addition of new events will bring new opportunities to participants. Among the seven events, the Chinese team is holding out high hopes to medal in the Short Track Speed Skating Mixed Team Relay and Freestyle Skiing Aerials Mixed Team.
