Construction and expansion work on the National Speed Skating Oval, the National Aquatics Center, and the National Indoor Stadium have all been completed for the 2022 Winter Olympics, while construction of 13 additional competition venues in Beijing's Chaoyang district is still ongoing, according to a press conference on Monday.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Village is expected to be completed by June of this year, said Yang Ping, deputy director of the Olympic Park Management Committee, at the press conference.
Yang said that the Olympic Village facilities will include 2,300 beds for athletes and officials who will travel to the games from around the world. Once Beijing 2022 concludes, the health and intelligence-themed village will become public housing open for rent.
Commonly known as the "Ice Ribbon," the National Speed Skating Oval covers an area of approximately 80,000 square meters and can hold 12,000 spectators. The ice rink in the Oval's skating hall is not only Asia's largest in terms of area but also the largest in the world to utilize carbon dioxide refrigerant technology to make the ice.
A 5G-based navigation system integrating both indoor and outdoor areas will soon be unveiled that will fulfill the needs of spectators, organizations, and athletes during the games.
Meanwhile, the National Aquatics Center has been converted from the "Water Cube" into the "Ice Cube." Yang described that it was the first competition venue to completed renovation.
In addition, the National Indoor Stadium has also been renovated and is now fitted with newly introduced ice-making and dehumidification systems. With a new ice hockey venue built on the north side, the stadium has a total area of 98,000 square meters.
The Main Media Center (MMC) for Beijing 2022 will finish construction by the end of this year.
Yang's team is currently working on an operation plan for the public area of the Olympic Park. Renovation and construction work of the National Stadium, the award plaza, the Olympic reception center, the dope-testing center, and many others are also still proceeding.
According to Yang, Beijing will continuously conserve and develop the venues from the summer and winter Olympics, even after the games, to allow people to enjoy the buildings in the future.
