Chinese players enjoyed a positive day at the start of the Total BWF badminton World Championships held in the Spanish city of Huelva on Sunday.
Lu Guangzu beat world number 18, Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand 21-16, 21-12 and said he was satisfied with his win.
"Both of us had chances, but I am better prepared and had better strategy. I got off to a good start in the first set and then won consecutive points in the middle of the second," he commented to Xinhua.
Lu's reward is a second-round tie against Chou Tien-Chen from Chinese Taipei, who defeated Sitthkom Thammasin 21-12, 21-10 and he said he was hoping to improve against a rival who has won their three previous meetings.
"I hope to make a breakthrough this time and I am looking forward to seeing if I have made progress after my recent training," he commented.
Meanwhile Chou Tien-Chen was impressed by Lu's performance. "Kunlavut is a tough player, but Lu looked great today. The previous results between us count for nothing and I'm not going to calculate my chances of winning," he commented.
Li Shifeng enjoyed a comfortable win 21-6, 21-10 against Timothy Lim from the U.S. before Zhao Junpeng showed personality to come back from a set down to knock out number 10 seed Wang Tzu Wei from Chinese Taipei. Zhao lost the first set 21-16 but fought back to claim the second and third sets 21-17, 21-15 in an hour and nine minutes.
In the women's tournament Han Yue defeated Vietnam's Thuy Linh Nguyen 21-16, 21-14, while in men's doubles, Huang Kai Chang and Liu Cheng defeated Chang Tak Ching and Yeung Ming Nok from Hong Kong of China 21-13, 21-17.
