China's Wang Qiang suffered back-to-back defeats as she lost to Elena-Gabriela Ruse from Romania in straight sets in the women's singles first round at the Birmingham Classic on Monday.
Wang, 30, seesawed with her opponent until 6-6 in both sets, losing the first tiebreak 8-6, then the second 14-12.
Last Tuesday, Wang was beaten in three sets in the opening round at the Nottingham Open by Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, who finally won both the singles and doubles titles.
Wang's best Grand Slam result was a quarterfinal finish at the 2019 U.S. Open. She reached a career-high world ranking of 12 that year but has slipped to a current 146.
