Chinese international striker Wu Lei is under quarantine after returning to China from La Liga club Espanyol, according to Chinese top-flight club Shanghai Port.

Wu rejoined Shanghai Port after ending his three-and-a-half-year spell at Espanyol.

"Wu Lei, who landed in Shanghai last night, is under quarantine according to relevant COVID-19 prevention and control policies," Shanghai Port said in a statement on Wednesday night.

The Shanghai club also released a video showing Wu at his quarantine hotel.

"I'm back, my Shanghai fans and friends. Thank you for your care and support. Looking forward to seeing you in the stadium," he said.

Wu will serve out a mandatory seven-day quarantine and three-day home isolation before joining up with Shanghai Port, which he left in early 2019 for Espanyol.

Wu could play against Henan Songshan Longmen on September 3, but his fitness is a doubt as he did not participate in Espanyol's pre-season training camp or travel with the squad for a friendly in England.

Wu scored 16 goals in 126 appearances for Espanyol, becoming the first ever Chinese player to score in La Liga in the process.

Although he was popular with fans of the Barcelona-based club, Wu found himself increasingly on the fringes of the team in the last two seasons, playing just 457 minutes in the league last season and 835 the year before, when the club played in Spain's second division.

The arrival of striker Joselu from Alaves in the summer further reduced Wu's chances of playing this season.
