Third-seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the semifinals of the ATP 500 Mexican Open with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow American Frances Tiafoe on Thursday.
Fritz won 75% of his first serves and saved four break point opportunities to prevail in an hour and 35 minutes at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess resort.
Tiafoe, meanwhile, committed four double faults and won just 36% of all points on his second serve.
Fritz's next opponent will be American Tommy Paul, who progressed to the last eight by overcoming compatriot Mackenzie McDonald 6-2 6-2.
In other quarterfinals, Australian eighth seed Alex de Minaur breezed past Japan's Tara Daniel 6-2, 6-2 and Denmark's Holger Rune claimed the win as Italy's Mateo Berrettini retired at 6-0, 1-0.
