Alvaro Morata scored twice as Atletico Madrid beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the derby on Sunday night.

The defeat means that Real Madrid slip to third in La Liga, with FC Barcelona the new leaders and Girona a surprising second.

A highly-motivated Morata put Atletico ahead with a fourth-minute header as Samuel Lino crossed from the left, and Antoine Griezmann scored another header in the 18th minute as Atletico again opened up a weak Real defense.

Toni Kroos got Real Madrid back into the game with a shot from outside the area in the 35th minute, but more poor defending saw Morata head in Atletico's third as he was completely unmarked in the first minute of the second half.

Real Sociedad came back from a goal down to win an entertaining game 4-3 at home to Getafe.

Takefusa Kubo put Real Sociedad ahead in the second minute of the game, but Getafe hit back through Carles Alena and Borja Mayoral before halftime.

Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty drew the home side level with half an hour to play and five minutes later Brais Mendez took advantage of a bad mistake from Getafe keeper David Soria to head his side ahead.

Oyarzabal's second goal of the game looked to have assured the win in the 88th minute, but Juanmi Latasa's injury-time header for Getafe made for a nervous few minutes in extra time.

Rayo Vallecano drew 1-1 at home to Villarreal, with Kike Perez cancelling out Alexander Sorloth's 15th-minute opener in the very next move of the match.

Cadiz keeper Conan Ledesma made a series of excellent saves to help his side earn a 1-1 draw away to Real Betis. Chris Ramos gave the visitors a surprise lead in the 41st minute, but Guido Rodriguez saved a point for the home side with 30 minutes left to play.

Kirian Rodriguez netted in injury time to give Las Palmas a 1-0 win at home to Granada in a match between recently promoted sides. The win has extra value for the home side, who played for over half an hour with 10 men after Mika Marmol was sent off in the 58th minute.

FC Barcelona came back from the dead on Saturday night to win 3-2 at home over Celta Vigo, when they looked beaten against a rival that led 2-0 thanks to a 19th-minute goal from Jorgen Strand Larsen and a 76th-minute effort from Tasos Douvikas.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice in the 81st and 85th minutes before Gavi's cross saw Joao Cancelo volley the winning goal in the 89th minute to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Girona kept up their brilliant start with a 5-3 victory over Mallorca, who had led through Vedat Muriqi's fourth-minute penalty.

However, Michel's side hit back with goals from David Lopez, Artem Dovbyk, Ivan Martin and Yangel Herrera before halftime, with Savio making it 5-1 in the 57th minute, before Abdon Prats netted two late goals for Mallorca.

Osasuna and Sevilla drew 0-0 in an even game with few chances, while Sergio Arribas scored a brace as Almeria twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at home to Valencia.

The former Real Madrid midfielder canceled out Diego Lopez's opener for the visitors, and drew Almeria level again after Javi Guerra had given Valencia the lead.

Athletic Bilbao conform their best start of this century with a 2-0 win away to Alaves. Inaki Williams opened the scoring with his first goal of the season in the first half, before assisting Oihan Sancet for the second after the break.

The only bad news for Athletic was a calf injury suffered by midfielder Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta in the closing minutes.
