Canada bag 1st two golds in freeski, snowboard at Gangwon 2024

Canada clinched its first two gold medals in the freestyle skiing and the snowboard events at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games on Sunday.

Canada's freestyle skier Charlie Beatty won the men's big air final, gifting the North American country its first gold at Gangwon 2024.

Japan's Olly Nicholls took the silver, and New Zealand's Luke Harrold embraced the bronze.

Eli Bouchard snatched the second gold for Canada in the men's snowboard big air event after earning the slopestyle silver on Thursday.

Bouchard was the only snowboarder with an aggregate score of over 180 points in the event.

Oliver Martin of the United States and Campbell Melville Ives of New Zealand finished second and third each.

Italy's freestyle skier Flora Tabanelli won her second title in the women's big air after taking the slopestyle gold on Wednesday.

Tabanelli scored a total of 180.0 points with her first two runs, beating the runner-up Daisy Thomas of Australia by a wide margin. The bronze went to Germany's Muriel Mohr who scored 166.0 points.

The slopestyle silver medalist Han Linshan of China finished sixth with 133.25 points, and her compatriot Xiao Siyu ended fourth with 159.75 points.

In the women's snowboard big air final, a neck-and-neck race unfolded with the score difference of less than three points on the medal podium.

Yura Murase of Japan was crowned with a total score of 154.25 points, while Rebecca Flynn of the United States and Lucia Georgalli of New Zealand followed with 153.0 points and 152.0 points each.

The figure skating competition continued with the ice dance rhythm dance and the women's singles short program.

Reigning world and Grand Prix Final champion Mao Shimada of Japan led the women's singles short program with 71.05 points, followed by her compatriot Yo Takagi with her personal best of 67.23 points.

Shin Jia of hosts South Korea, who was runner-up at both the world championships and the Grand Prix Final, stood third with 66.48 points in the short program.

In the ice dance rhythm dance, France's duo finished first with 62.39 points, followed by the U.S. and South Korean pairs with 57.46 points and 56.58 points each.

Chinese curlers swept Latvia 8-5 in the mixed doubles round robin after defeating Japan 7-5 in the previous day.

Japan overpowered Brazil 11-1 in the round robin, while the United States beat Qatar 13-1.

A total of 1,802 athletes, aged 14-18, from 78 countries and regions are competing in four cities of Gangneung, PyeongChang, Jeongseon and Hoengseong until February 1.

The Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics features seven sports, 15 disciplines and 81 events.
