Lieke Martens announced her retirement from the Dutch women's team after 13 years, the 31-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward revealed on social media on Tuesday.
Martens will retire following the next two European Championship 2025 qualifiers for the Netherlands against Finland on May 31 and June 4 this year.
In August 2011, Martens made her debut for the Dutch national team and has since played 158 international matches for her country. The former FC Barcelona player was a key figure during a successful period for the Dutch women's team under coach Sarina Wiegman.
The team's biggest success came with the European title in 2017. With three goals and one assist in six games, Martens was named the best player of that European Championship held in the Netherlands. Two years later, Martens and the Netherlands finished second at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
"I would like to let you know that the next two matches with the Netherlands will be my last matches in 'Oranje,'" Martens wrote on Instagram. "After this, I already know, I will say goodbye to you with pain in my heart."
