FC Barcelona announced on Tuesday that Alexia Putellas has signed a new contract with the club until June 2026, with the option to extend for a further year.
30-year-old Putellas is considered one of the best female footballers of all time, after scoring 189 goals in 424 appearances for Barcelona, and a further 30 in 114 games for Spain's national women's team.
Her performances were recognized on a global scale when she was awarded the Ballon d'Or in 2021 and 2022 as the best player in the world.
A knee injury limited Putellas' appearances in 2023 and she only played a minor role in Spain's triumph in the Women's World Cup, and another knee problem suffered in November 2023 means she has only made eight appearances in the Liga F.
She made an appearance as a substitute as Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 8-0 in the final of the Copa de la Reina last Saturday, with that win meaning she has now won 29 trophies with her club.
Putellas has the chance to raise that number to 30 when Barcelona play Olympique Lyonnais in the final of the Women's Champions League, which is played at Athletic Bilbao's San Mames Stadium on Saturday.
