A first-half goal from Braian Romero fired Velez Sarsfield to a 1-0 home victory over Newell's Old Boys in Argentina's Primera Division on Tuesday.
Romero put the hosts ahead in the 20th minute when he ran onto Francisco Pizzini's perfectly weighted through ball and slotted his shot into the bottom far corner.
It marked Velez's first win of the new season, lifting the Buenos Aires outfit to 13th in the 28-team standings, behind Newell's on goal difference.
"It was a very tight contest and the stop-start nature of the game made it difficult," Velez manager Gustavo Quinteros told reporters after the match.
"In the first half we had our moments of dominance but after that we were made to work hard, which makes the result even more pleasing," the former Bolivia international defender added.
