Southampton returned to the Premier League just a year after suffering relegation from the top flight with a 1-0 win over Leeds United in the Championship (second division) play-off final on Sunday.

Adam Armstrong's 24th-minute goal was enough to send the "Saints" back to the elite over Leeds, who also suffered relegation a year ago.

Southampton join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in returning to the Premier League after they finished first and second in the regular season,

The defeat was harsh on Leeds, who finished third in the Championship table with 90 points to Southampton's 87, but Southampton fans will point to the fact that they won both of their league ties against Leeds, beating them 3-1 at home and winning 2-1 in Leeds' Elland Road ground on the last day of the regular campaign.

The task that now awaits Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton is establishing themselves back in the Premier League. This has become increasingly difficult in recent campaigns and the fact that the three promoted teams last season (Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town) have all gone straight back down, shows the difficulties that lie ahead.
