Having already qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Brazil took home four straight wins in the opening week of the 2024 VNL in Rio de Janeiro from May 15 to 19. Ranking eighth in the world, Japan needed to earn as many world ranking points as possible to get the ticket for Paris.
The two teams battled neck-and-neck from the first set, and the Japanese once took the lead with strong defensive play. But the Brazilians quickly recovered en route to secure a fifth win of the season with powerful attacking and staunch blocking.
Earlier on Tuesday, Thailand beat Dominican Republic 3-1 to take its first victory in the tournament.
