After Dortmund had made several good chances in the first half, Real took control as Carvajal headed in from a corner after 74 minutes and Vinicius Jr fired home the second nine minutes later.
The Germans had to rue the missed chances in the first half as Karim Adeyemi went wide when rounding goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after 21 minutes.
Then Niclas Fuellkrug hit the post and low shots by Julian Brandt and Marcel Sabitzer were saved by Courtois.
Madrid looked livelier from the start in the second half, and took control after Carvajal headed in from Toni Kroos' corner.
Madrid got the second goal when Dortmund's Ian Maatsen gave the ball away on the edge of their own box, allowing midfielder Jude Bellingham to feed a perfect pass for Vinicius Jr, who struck home with ease.

"It was a very difficult game, much more difficult than we had expected," Real coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "We changed things because in the first half we were a bit lazy."
Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels said his team "played a great game" and was "really proud of the team."
"We showed a lot of courage, heart and footballing skill. We missed out on scoring and then conceded the goal. That shows their quality, but it also took a bit of luck today," the 35-year-old said.
