A first-half goal from former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa fired Gremio to a 1-0 away win over Huachipato in their Copa Libertadores Group C clash on Tuesday.
Costa put the Brazilian side ahead in the sixth minute by nodding home at the far post after Franco Cristaldo's cross.
The Chilean outfit dominated possession and had 18 shots on goal but were unable to find a way past Gremio's Argentine goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.
The result guaranteed Gremio a place in the competition's last 16 while Huachipato were eliminated.
Gremio, who are working through a backlog of matches after their games were suspended for almost a month because of severe floods, will play their final Copa Libertadores group game when they host Estudiantes on Saturday.
