Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcocer scored early goals as Costa Rica bowed out of the Copa America with a 2-1 victory over Paraguay on Tuesday, a result that proved little more than a consolation for the Central American side.

Calvo headed home following Joseph Mora's corner and Alcocer doubled the advantage with a 20-yard drive that cannoned into the bottom-left corner.

Ramon Sosa reduced the deficit with a 55th-minute strike as Paraguay laid siege to Costa Rica's goal.

But, despite controlling more than two thirds of possession and having 17 shots on goal to two, the South Americans were unable to produce an equalizer.

Both teams will return home, with Costa Rica finishing third in Group D - behind Colombia and Brazil - and Paraguay last, with three losses from as many games.
