World No. 1 Lasha Bekauri of Georgia successfully defended his 90kg title at the Paris Olympics, while three-time Olympian Barbara Matic won Croatia's first-ever Olympic gold medal in judo on Wednesday.
Bekauri defeated Sanshiro Murao of Japan in the final by two waza-ari, earning his second consecutive Olympic gold medal and Georgia's first gold in Paris. Maxime-Gael Ngayap Hambou of France and Theodoros Tselidis of Greece shared the bronze medal.
In the women's 70kg final, World No. 1 Matic beat the Olympic debutant Miriam Butkereit of Germany by a waza-ari. The bronze medal was shared by Gabriella Willems of Belgium and Austria's Michaela Polleres.
