South Korea extended their Olympic winning streak in the men's sabre team with a third consecutive gold on Wednesday, edging Hungary 45-41 at the Paris 2024.
Led by individual event winner Oh Sang-uk, South Korea currently rank No. 1 in the world along with four-time Olympian Gu Bon-gil and Park Sang-won, while world champions Hungary featured three-time gold medalist Aron Szilagyi.
In a replay of the world championship final this year, South Korea kept a solid lead until the sixth round when Andras Szatmari outscored Oh 7-5 to cut the gap to just one point. Replacing 35-year-old Gu, substitute Do Gyeong-dong then held off the nerves and delivered a stunning 5-0 run in his first and only bout in Paris.
South Korea maintained their momentum en route to their third consecutive men's sabre team gold following London 2012 and Tokyo 2020. The event was not held at Rio 2016. Gu has claimed his third straight team gold, having been part of the team at both London and Tokyo.
Hosts France, who have back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2008, secured a bronze with a 45-25 victory over Iran.
The women's foil team event will take place on Thursday.
