Teenage Chinese surfer Yang Siqi ended her novel journey in the Paris Olympics after losing to Caroline Marks of the United States in the women's round of 16 on Thursday.
Facing the changing sea in Teahupo'o, Yang only finished the heat with a total of 1.63 points against the 6.93 points of Marks.
"Both the wind directions and the wave conditions have changed today, so I couldn't find the direction and couldn't find the waves," Yang said after the heat.
"There were barrels today, so I kept waiting. Until I realized there were not that many barrels, much time had been wasted. But given the 5-point difference with my opponent, I needed a barrel to catch up, so I continued to wait."
The 15-year-old admitted she was a bit nervous against Marks, one of the major gold medal contenders. "But at the same time I am very happy, as I could learn a lot by competing with the best," she said.
Yang is the first Chinese surfer to compete in the Olympics. "I am very happy, I caught several big waves. But I didn't achieve my gold to complete a barrel, so there are still some regrets," she commented on her performance.
But Yang would enjoy the final moments of her first Olympics. "I would take some pictures with the best surfers, and I also want to take some pictures of the beautiful scenery here in Teahupo'o."
