Carlos Palacios scored a second-half equalizer as Colo-Colo earned a 1-1 home draw with River Plate in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores quarterfinal on Tuesday.

German Pezzella gave the visitors the lead just before halftime by volleying home after Marcos Acuna's delivery from a set piece.

Palacios put his side on level terms when he controlled Arturo Vidal's through ball with a superb first touch before turning and slotting a low finish into the far corner.

"In the first half we were nervous and didn't execute the strategy that we had planned," Palacios said.

"I was one of the players at fault. I didn't find the spaces well or I received the ball in bad positions. But we had a perfect second half and I feel like we could have won the game. But it isn't a bad result," the Chile international midfielder added.

The return leg will be played at River Plate's Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires next Tuesday.
