Argentina's Lanus secured a berth in the Copa Sudamericana semifinals on Wednesday with a penalty shootout win over Colombian side Independiente Medellin.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie in Buenos Aires, Daniel Londono gifted the visitors the lead just before halftime of the return leg by inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

Colombian Mender Garcia equalized with a 61st-minute strike and the hosts defended stoically in the remaining half hour to guarantee their passage to the last four.

"We played a great match, even though we missed a number of scoring chances in the first 25 minutes," said Lanus manager Ricardo Zielinski.

"We were the better team over both legs, which is very satisfying and gives us confidence going into the semifinals."

The Copa Sudamericana is South America's equivalent of the UEFA Europa League and the winner will earn an automatic berth in next year's Copa Libertadores, the region's premier club competition.
