Uruguay's Penarol advanced to the Copa Libertadores semifinals on Thursday following a goalless home draw with Brazilian giants Flamengo.
Five-time champions Penarol won the first leg in Rio de Janeiro 1-0 and were content to defend with a low defensive line to preserve their quarterfinal lead at Estadio Campeon del Siglo.
The strategy paid off as Flamengo managed only two shots on target despite controlling 74% of possession.
"I'm sure that we can play better but we did what we had to do," Penarol manager Diego Aguirre told a post-match news conference.
"We have to give credit where it's due and I'm so happy for everyone at the club, especially the fans."
Penarol will meet Brazil's Botafogo in the semifinals over two legs in October. The winner on aggregate will meet either Atletico Mineiro or River Plate in the final on November 30 in Buenos Aires.
Penarol, one of South America's most successful clubs, have not won the region's premier club competition since 1987.
