Leverkusen's coach Xabi Alonso shared that he often feels excitement heading into training sessions, particularly when thinking about Nigerian striker Victor Boniface's talent for both artistic moves and powerful goals.
Boniface was a standout in Leverkusen's recent 1-0 victory over AC Milan on Tuesday, securing their second win in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League. The striker was also widely praised for his eye-catching no-look pass in the opener against Feyenoord. In that play, he pretended to use his right foot but skillfully flicked the ball with his left, quickly making him a viral sensation on social media.
Alonso has referred to these moments as the "Boni-Tricks," while German international midfielder Florian Wirtz calls Boniface's move a "signature" play, saying, "No other footballer can do that the way he does."
Though Alonso is known to have a close working relationship with Boniface, he clarified that he doesn't see himself as a "father figure," as Boniface once described him. "I am not that old," Alonso said. "As a coach, my job is to find the right approach to help players reach their next level."
Boniface, who is contracted with Leverkusen until 2028, is seen by Alonso as a player who sometimes requires a softer approach and at other times a firmer hand. "He's young and going through key development steps," said Alonso.
Following a successful season that included a Bundesliga title and a German Cup win, Alonso's goal for Boniface is to help him improve his efficiency and manage his temperament. The striker, who made his debut for the Nigerian national team, had some injury setbacks last year. "For him, it's important to build a consistent flow of playing time," added Alonso.
Alonso sees Boniface as a strong fit for key Leverkusen players like Jeremie Frimpong, Alejandro Grimaldo, and Florian Wirtz, noting his physical strength. "The left wing and the box are where he's most comfortable," Alonso said, adding that Boniface's ability to break through defenses opens up opportunities for his teammates.
Alonso anticipates a promising future for Boniface, and reports indicate that leading European clubs have taken notice of the forward. Boniface, however, has expressed a preference for the Bundesliga or La Liga. "I'm not saying I'm leaving, but if I had to choose, it would be Germany or Spain," he commented.
